AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore lefty Dillon Peters allowed only two runs in seven innings Sunday while five players recorded two hits each as the NR/No. 24 Texas Longhorns earned a 6-3 win over the Sacramento State Hornets. The Longhorns recorded 12 hits on the afternoon to win the weekend series in front of 5,667 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Peters (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout for Texas (2-1). Matt Moynihan, Taylor Stell, Mark Payton, C.J Hinojosa and Weston Hall had two hits apiece. Payton finished the weekend 7-for-12 (.583) at the plate while Hinojosa was 6-for-11 (.545) for the three games. Texas hit .347 as a team with seven stolen bases.
Sacramento State (1-2) recorded two solo homers on the afternoon with David Del Grande getting one of them in a 2-for-4 performance. Zach Morgan (0-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in three innings.
The Hornets posted the first run of the game in the top of the first as Rhys Hoskins drove in Nathan Lukes, who was hit by a pitch on the first ball of the game.
UT started strong, driving in runs during the first four innings of the game. Stell started off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle and a steal at second. Payton drove in Stell on a base hit to post the Longhorns' first run of the game.

Hinojosa, who doubled to left field during his first at-bat, was the second to cross home on an RBI base hit from Hall. Stell induced a sacrifice bunt to drive in Hall in the bottom of the second to bring Texas to a 3-1 lead.
The Longhorns extended their lead to a 5-1 margin with a run in the third and fourth innings. Payton, who posted the first triple of the season, was driven in during the third inning on an RBI from Madison Carter. Hall made it home in the fifth after a base hit and steal at second.

On overall weekend play: Well it wasn't a sweep but it was, I think, good baseball by both teams. I think that a lot of good things were done by both teams throughout the weekend, both teams hit the ball frequently and hard and put pressure on the defenses. I think that we bunted a little bit more today than we had in the first two games but there was a reason for that. The first two games I wanted to be sure to pass on the message to the players that the hard work they have been doing with the hitting was going to pay off. So we stayed away from the bunted and then today for the game we did talk about how `okay now you see that you can do that and you have confidence and now we want to add the bunting to the whole process of scoring runs.' The first couple bunts we got down did that so it was a good day for us.
On thoughts about being more aggressive defensively today: I think that they were much more consistent at the plate, there were only a few swings that were out of control, and it was our objective to maintain our focus and keep the hitting plan really simple; see ball, hit ball up the middle, and let the ball go to any field where it wants to go. I think they stayed with that plan and only a couple swings were out of control and that's pretty darn good. In the whole series it was pretty consistent. They flattened out a little bit yesterday, we talked about that today and they agreed and got back to playing it pitch by pitch today.
On thoughts about Dillon Peters' pitching game: The first inning was a big inning and if that had exploded, it would've made it much more difficult. The fact that he worked his way out of that was huge and giving up only one run after what he was faced with and the potential of a big inning against a good team. They are a championship team and I keep repeating that. The name doesn't sound like much because they don't have a history but it is a really good team; it is a championship-type team. An example is just the play the guy made at first base to home plate and the catcher catching that and tagging the guy is pretty amazing right there. They were very, very good all weekend.

On thoughts about the weekend's win: We looked real good. Our offense was hitting the ball all weekend and hats off to them. Defense played pretty well and we are just happy that we came back and got that second win this weekend. We got a full head of steam going into this next weekend.
On thoughts of coming out well today after rough last 10 innings: We just stuck to our game plan and did what we have been practicing all year. Obviously it has paid off. I feel like everybody is thinking the same way and we are ready to roll.

On how it feels starting the season with wins: It feels good. We had a bunch of adrenaline going Friday night and it carried all the way to today. We are excited to get out there as a team and see what we can do.
On thoughts about his great weekend play: I am just staying within myself, trying to work good counts, and get good pitches for a hit.
On thoughts about today's game: We safely squeezed twice, we stole a couple bases, and that is who we are going to be this year. That is how we are going to have to win games. Dillon threw a great game minus the first two guys, other than that he hit his lights out all day. So hats off to him and Corey (Knebel) for closing the door.
